The cave originated in the 19th century as a quarry dug into the tuff to extract limestone, which was used in the manufacture of lime.
A special place, where every stone holds a story and a precious secret. A restaurant where fine dining is both an art and a ritual: here you can clear your mind, find peace and feel lighter.
Grotta Marcello is a mountain refuge on the slopes of Castello
Two centuries of Cagliari life, carved into the tufa
The cave originated in the 19th century as a quarry dug into the tuff to extract limestone, which was used in the manufacture of lime.
During the Second World War, Cagliari was one of the most heavily bombed cities in Italy. Thanks to the generosity of the businessman Pietro Marcello, the cave became a safe haven for the people of central Cagliari.
During the boom years and the era of La Dolce Vita, the Grotta was home to a renowned bar and patisserie that, come evening, transformed into a hub of social life: jazz, swing and rock ’n’ roll, frequented by artists, intellectuals and young people seeking new experiences.
Grotta became a restaurant and pizzeria and, following extensive renovations, has been transformed into the culinary haven steeped in history and charm that you can admire today: one of the landmarks of the vibrant city of Cagliari.
